How the work runs

The stages specific to this discipline. The firm-wide sequence, from enquiry through to support after handover, is on the home page.

  1. Survey alongside or in dock

    The vessel is examined where it sits. Hull condition, anode state and the condition of the propulsion and hydraulic systems decide what the scope actually is, which is rarely what the original enquiry said it was.

  2. Scope and window agreed against the docking plan

    Marine work is bounded by the dock window, not by the task list. The scope is set against the date the vessel has to be back in the water, and anything that will not fit is said so before the job starts.

  3. Strip down and blast

    Systems are opened up and hull surfaces are sand or grit blasted back to the specified standard, which is the point at which the real condition of the steel becomes visible.

  4. Overhaul, renew, fabricate

    Shaft lines, seals, gearboxes, servo motors, valves and gear pumps are overhauled or renewed. Hull sections are fabricated where plate has to be replaced, and sacrificial anodes are renewed.

  5. Paint scheme to the specified standard

    The protective and paint scheme is applied to ISO standards. On a hull this is the element that determines how the work looks in twelve months, not on handover day.

  6. Reassembly, alignment and trials

    Systems are closed up and the shaft line aligned before the vessel goes back to work. Where installation of new equipment is in scope, technicians trained on that system do the fitting.

Scope is agreed against the docking plan rather than discovered halfway through it, so the date the vessel is due back is a date rather than an aspiration.

Blasting, fabrication, propulsion, hydraulics and shafting sit with one firm, so nobody is waiting on a second contractor to finish before they can start.
Trained fitting, not general labour
New equipment is installed by technicians trained on the system concerned, which is the difference between a warranty that survives commissioning and one that does not.

Questions

Can you work during a dry-dock or shutdown window?
Yes. That is when most of the overhaul work happens. Shaft line, hydraulics, propulsion and hull work are sequenced to fit the window the yard has given.
Can you handle hull work and machinery work under one contract?
Yes, and that is usually the point. Blasting, hull fabrication, anode renewal, propulsion, hydraulics and the shaft line all sit with one firm, so no crew is waiting for a second contractor to clear the space.
What happens if the hull is worse than the survey suggested?
It is reported before it is worked on, with what it does to the scope and to the window. Hull condition is not fully known until the surfaces are blasted back, and pretending otherwise at quotation stage is how a dock window gets lost.
